A typical 1930’s detached house in Oxford that underwent a complete renovation, the demolition of a badly built rear extension, and the addition of a new extension.
The original house’s rear extension suffered major subsidence. The house also had a 2 story side addition serving as an independent housing unit.
The typical extension in the UK is a full rear extension. However, this tends to create dark central rooms with a lack of identity.
Here, that type of rear extension was torn down and the existing side extension was connected to the main house. On the back of the side extension, a new kitchen and eating area was added to create a “courtyard” space at the back of the house.
